NFL Year In Review

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

This is way overdue. Better late than never, I guess, right?

At the start of the 2009 NFL season, I posted my predictions for the then-upcoming season. It’s now time to review those predictions and see how I did (Hint: Not great, but getting better!).

Here’s my predictions (actual season outcomes in parentheses and bold):

*Seattle Seahawks 2009 Predictions*

End of season record: 10 wins, 6 losses (5 wins, 11 losses)
Win NFC West?: Yes. (No.)
Playoffs? If yes, how deep do they go?: Yes. Lose in first round. (Did not make playoffs.)

*2009 NFL Season Predictions*

AFC East Champions: New England (New England)
AFC North Champions: Pittsburgh (Cincinnati)
AFC South Champions: Indianapolis (Indianapolis)
AFC West Champions: San Diego (San Diego)
NFC East Champions: Philadelphia (Dallas)
NFC North Champions: Minnesota (Minnesota)
NFC South Champions: New Orleans (New Orleans)
NFC West Champions: Seattle (Arizona)

AFC Champion: New England (Indianapolis)
NFC Champion: Philadelphia (New Orleans)
NFL Superbowl Champion: New England (New Orleans)

NFL MVP: Adrian Peterson (Peyton Manning)
Coach of the Year: Mike McCarthy (Green Bay) (Marvin Lewis)
Offensive Rookie of the Year: Mark Sanchez (Percy Harvin)
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Aaron Curry (Brian Cushing)

Number of correct predictions: 5

Well, better than last year (3). Still not great. Seattle really let me down!

So ends another season, albeit belatedly. Thanks for hanging on. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll do predictions and picks for the 2010 NFL season, but if I do, you’ll know where to find them.

Super Bowl Result

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Another great Super Bowl! I have to admit, I was glad to see my pick turn out incorrect. I think it’s great that the Saints won. Thanks to some gutsy play-calling (that onside kick to start the 3rd quarter was nothing short of brilliant – not to mention incredibly ballsy), nearly perfect quarterback play (Brees got off an amazing number of completions), and superb defense at the end (the interception was the play of the game, IMO), the Saints proved that they are the best team in the league. It was also nice to see the referees NOT having a major role in the outcome – they called the game fairly and accurately (good on them for overturning that 2 point conversion call!).

Overall postseason results: 5-6 (45.5%)

End of 2009 NFL Season.

Super Bowl

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

It’s hard to believe another NFL season is nearly in the books. The only business left to attend to is the big finale, the Super Bowl. This one should be a great one – two very talented and high-scoring teams, superstar quarterbacks, and incredibly fast defenses. If it lives up to all the hype, we should be in store for a very memorable and entertaining game. Here’s my pick:

Super Bowl XLIV Pick: Indianapolis Colts

Although my gut wants to see the Saints win, it’s incredibly hard for me to bet against Peyton Manning. He’s not my favorite player by any means, but he is quite possibly the smartest and most-capable quarterback the league has ever seen. He makes the others around him better, and he always seems to find a way to get the win. It would be great to see the Saints win, but my brain says pick the Colts. And since this is a picking game, I gotta go with who I think will win. We’ll see, though…it should be fun.

To conclude the season, a season recap and prediction review will be posted sometime after the Super Bowl.
