Death to Scarves Everywhere!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

This silliness, found on MSNBC:

Dunkin’ Donuts pulled a television spot featuring talk show host and Food Network personality Rachael Ray this weekend after a Fox news commentator associated it with terrorists.

In the ad, Ray is wearing a scarf that Michelle Malkin said in her nationally syndicated column resembled a kiffiyeh, Middle Eastern garb that is “popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos.”

Dunkin’s Senior Vice President for Communications Margie Myers issued a statement saying the scarf “was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended.

“However, as of this past weekend, we are no longer using the online ad because the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee.”

In her column, Malkin also noted that it could appear at times that actor Colin Farrell, rapper Kanye West and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean have been photographed in similar scarves that were “distinctive hate couture.”

Distinctive hate couture?  Guess it’s time for me to add yet another term to my post-9/11 vocabulary.

Is this really what we’ve become?  It’s easy to laugh at things like this, but it is also so very sad.

Logic?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

According to polls shown yesterday evening and this morning, some voters in the Midwest and parts of the upper South (for example - Kentucky, West Virginia) are stating that if Hillary Clinton isn’t the Democratic nominee, they will not vote for Barack Obama but will instead shift their vote to John McCain.  What kind of logic (or lack thereof) is this?

I consider myself a Democrat and I support the Democratic Party and its ideals and overall platform.
I support Democratic candidate X over Democratic candidate Y.
If Democratic candidate X loses, I will not support Democratic candidate Y and will instead shift my vote to the Republican candidate.

Huh?

Both Obama and Clinton have acknowledged that their campaign platforms are nearly 90% the same, and within that 10% of disagreement, they’re really not all that far apart.  So, in essence, they’re basically saying that they both have virtually the same plans and outlook for the country.  As a voter who (supposedly) supports the Democratic Party, why would someone even think of jumping ship to the Republicans when the two Democratic candidates are so close in beliefs and platform?  It makes absolutely no sense!  What ever happened to party loyalty?  This kind of logic is so flawed - talk about shooting yourself in the foot!   It’s scary.

The Democratic Party has a lot of work to do in the next several weeks and months to stop this mindset and prevent a significant Democratic voter defection to the Republicans.  It will be very intriguing to see how all of this plays out.

Embracing Change

Thanks to the genius of WordPress, I am happy to report that TwoThree.net has taken giant leaps forward to become the flexible, clean, and feature-rich website I have always wanted.  So today it’s out with the old, and in with the new.

I have to say, the old site served me very well for 5 years (5 years!) – it was the fruit of endless hours of coding during one hot and challenging 6 month period I spent living in Yakima, WA.  I was fresh out of school at the time, newly minted as a college graduate and facing a very difficult IT job market in 2003.  Fortunately for me, a college friend living in Yakima and a job opening at a new Starbucks came in to save the day, ensuring I wouldn’t be homeless or totally unemployed.  The rest, they say, is history, and things sure have changed since then.  I think it’s fitting Twothree.net changes as well.  I think it’s time, and I couldn’t be happier with this new publishing system.  I hope you enjoy it as well.

I don’t really know who, if anyone, visits and/or reads my site, but if you are one of those few who does stop by – either by accident or on purpose – enjoy your stay.  I look forward to 5+ more years of good times here at this site, my modest little home on the Internet.
