2009 NFL Season Predictions and Week 1 Picks

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

No, it’s not Christmas… It’s football season! Can you hardly believe it? Wow, it just seems like a few short months ago that I did the 2008 NFL season wrap up! And now here we are again, on the eve of the start of the 2009 NFL season. Amazing! I am, as you might imagine, once again pretty jacked up for the start of this season and I’m looking forward to a really exciting and competitive bunch of games. I’m also hoping for another successful season of picks, though it’s going to be tough to match the success I had last year.

In case you have no clue what this stuff is all about, let me explain. I have started a personal tradition of sorts of making some predictions about the upcoming NFL season as well as about the Seattle Seahawks’ performance. In addition to these predictions, I also list my “picks of the week” for the weekly scheduled NFL games. I keep track of my record and then see how I fare at the end of the season. It’s a bit of work, but thanks to Excel, some great websites, some luck, and a little intuition, it all turns out to be a whole lot of fun. I enjoy it, and maybe you will too!

OK, so here goes:

*Seattle Seahawks 2009 Predictions*

End of season record: 10 wins, 6 losses
Win NFC West?: Yes.
Playoffs? If yes, how deep do they go?: Yes. Lose in first round.

*2009 NFL Season Predictions*

AFC East Champions: New England
AFC North Champions: Pittsburgh
AFC South Champions: Indianapolis (Jacksonville comes close)
AFC West Champions: San Diego
NFC East Champions: Philadelphia
NFC North Champions: Minnesota
NFC South Champions: New Orleans
NFC West Champions: Seattle (regaining the rightful spot!)

AFC Champion: New England (San Diego makes it interesting)
NFC Champion: Philadelphia (New Orleans makes it interesting)
NFL Superbowl Champion: New England

NFL MVP: Adrian Peterson
Coach of the Year: Mike McCarthy (Green Bay)
Offensive Rookie of the Year: Mark Sanchez
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Aaron Curry

*Week 1 Picks*

Pittsburgh
Atlanta
Cincinnati
Minnesota
Indianapolis
New Orleans
Dallas
Philadelphia
Baltimore
Houston
NY Giants
Arizona
Seattle
Green Bay
New England
San Diego

The rules: Season predictions can be changed prior to opening kickoff of the first game of the season (9/10/09). Game picks can be revised until 12 AM Thursday (if a Thursday game) and/or Sunday each week of the season.

Results and picks for Week 2 to come next week!
